Image size guide

Image size can refer to pixel dimensions, total pixel count, or storage size. Knowing the difference makes resizing much easier.

Pixel dimensions

Dimensions describe width and height in pixels, such as 1920 × 1080. Multiplying those numbers gives the total number of pixels in the image.

File size

File size is the amount of storage the image uses, measured in KB or MB. Dimensions, format, visual complexity, transparency, and compression all influence it.

Common dimensions

Resolution and print

For screens, pixel dimensions are usually the practical measurement. Printing also depends on physical size and pixel density. A file that looks large on a screen may not contain enough pixels for a large, sharp print.
