Image aspect ratio guide

Aspect ratio describes the proportional relationship between an image's width and height.

What aspect ratio means

A 16:9 image is 16 units wide for every 9 units high. Both 1920 × 1080 and 1280 × 720 have the same 16:9 shape even though they contain different numbers of pixels.

Common aspect ratios

  • 1:1 is square.
  • 4:3 is a traditional photograph and display shape.
  • 3:2 is common in camera photography.
  • 16:9 is a wide video and screen format.

Avoiding distortion

Keep Lock aspect ratio selected in the resizer. Changing one dimension then updates the other automatically. If an exact target has a different ratio, resizing alone cannot fill it without stretching; cropping or padding is needed.
